Simple Steps Towards the Sunnah

Making the Sunnah a habit in your life is one of the most worthwhile and beautiful things you can do. Finding easy things to do and incorporating them into your routine will not only bring you closer to Rasulullah (saw) but by loving him, you will become closer to Allah swt insha’Allah.

Simple Sunnah #1!

Rubbing your eyes upon awakening

Narrated by Maymoona RA: Whenever, Muhammad (Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam) awoke from his sleep, he would rub his eyes and sit on the bed for a little while – Ibn Majah

This is probably something you already do but now inshaAllah you’ll get rewarded for doing it with the right intention.

Simple Sunnah #2!

Dua before leaving the house

As much as I love staying in the house all day, eventually you have to get up and leave. So finding a simple sunnah that you can incorporate into your life while you’re on the go is ace!

By saying this dua before you leave the house, the angels will protect and defend you from Shaytaan. And which one of us doesn’t need that!

Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallalah, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata ‘illa billah (In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah, there is no help and no strength except in Allah)

Simple Sunnah #3!

Outside of Ramadan, and inside for iftar, we love to eat. Eating out, eating in, eating with friends. Where there’s Muslims, food isn’t far away. So why not take advantage by bringing a little Sunnah to the occassion and say “Bismillah” before eating and drinking?

When he sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam put his hand in the food, he would say, “Bismillah (with the Name of Allah),’’ and he told people to say this when eating. He said, “When any one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, let him say ‘Bismillaahi fee awwalihi wa aakhirihi,’ (with the name of Allah, at its beginning -and at its end).” -Bukhari

Simple Sunnah #4!

Say Alhamdulillah after eating and drinking

So you’ve finished your meal and it was delicious… Even if it wasn’t, you should still say “Alhamdulillah” when you’re finished as this is the Sunnah of our Beloved Messenger (saw). Every time we eat, we should remind ourselves of how sometimes 3 days would pass and no fire would be lit to prepare food in Rasulullah’s (saw) house. This isn’t a phenomenon that happened 1,400 years ago, it happens to our brothers and sisters now across the globe everyday subhanallah. May Allah swt provide for them, Ameen.

The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “Allah is pleased with a person who eats some food and then praises Him (Allah) for it, or who drinks some drink and then praises Him (Allah) for it.” – Sahih Muslim: 6932

Simple Sunnah #5!

When dressing start with the right and when undressing start with the left

As Muslims, and even non- Muslims, we concentrate heavily on what people are wearing – she’s not wearing hijab, his trousers are below the ankles etc but never HOW they got dressed.

InshaAllah, if you’re reading this blogpost, Allah swt has blessed you enough in life to also have clothes on your back as well. What better simple sunnah to perform than one that naturally ties into your everyday life.

`A’isha (ra) relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to like to start with the right side when putting on his sandals, combing his hair, engaging in his ritual purifications, and in all of his activities – Sahih Bukhari

These are just a few simple sunnahs that you can incorporate into your lives everday to take some simple steps towards the sunnah.

I pray that Allah swt reunites us with Rasulullah (saw) in jannatul firdous so we can all look upon his blessed face and hear his blessed voice, Ameen.
